The Balanced Tropical Fish Tank: A Natural Guide to a Thriving Community Aquarium

Thinking of setting up a tropical fish tank? This comprehensive beginner’s guide covers everything from choosing the right aquarium, filtration and cycling to live aquatic plants, natural substrates, compatible community fish and varied feeding. Learn how to create a healthy, balanced tropical aquarium naturally—and avoid the common mistakes that can put your fish at risk.

There is something incredibly peaceful about a thriving tropical aquarium.

Fish move through lush green plants, a small school of tetras flashes through the middle of the tank, Corydoras quietly explore the bottom, and every part of the aquarium seems to have found its place.

But a healthy community aquarium doesn't begin with choosing the prettiest fish at the aquarium shop.

It begins long before the first fish goes into the tank.

One of the biggest mistakes new fish keepers make is treating an aquarium like a container that simply needs water, a filter and some fish. In reality, you're creating a small living ecosystem, and everything you add—from the gravel and plants to the filter and eventually the fish—affects the balance of that environment.

Get that balance right and a tropical aquarium can be surprisingly easy and incredibly rewarding to maintain.

Get it wrong, and you can find yourself battling cloudy water, algae, stressed or sick fish and constantly changing water conditions without really understanding why.

So let's build it properly from the beginning.

Choosing Your First Tropical Aquarium

For a beginner, bigger is often easier.

That doesn't mean you need an enormous aquarium in your lounge room. It simply means that very small tanks can be much less forgiving than people realise.

In a larger volume of water, changes tend to happen more gradually. Temperature is generally more stable, and waste products are diluted through a greater volume of water. In a tiny aquarium, overfeeding, one dead fish or too many inhabitants can affect water quality surprisingly quickly.

A tank around 60–75 litres, often roughly the size of a traditional two-foot aquarium depending on its dimensions, can be a very manageable starting point for a beginner who wants a small tropical community.

If you have the room and budget, something around 100–150 litres gives you even more stability and a greater choice of compatible fish.

But don't choose your aquarium based only on how many fish you'd like to put in it.

Think about the adult size of those fish, where they naturally spend their time, whether they need to live in groups, how active they are and how much waste they'll eventually produce.

A tiny fish in the aquarium shop may look as though it takes up virtually no room. Six months later, it may be a very different story.

Don't ask how many fish will fit. Ask how many fish can thrive.

That's a much better starting point for any community aquarium.

Before You Add a Drop of Water

This is one of the least exciting parts of setting up an aquarium—and one of the most important.

Before you think about gravel, plants or fish, think about what will be underneath the tank.

Water is heavy.

One litre of freshwater weighs approximately one kilogram, so a 75-litre aquarium already contains around 75 kilograms of water before you've added the weight of the glass, gravel, rocks, driftwood, filter, hood and other equipment.

Larger aquariums become extremely heavy very quickly.

That's why a fish tank should never simply be placed on a convenient cabinet because it happens to fit.

Use a purpose-built aquarium stand or another structure that has been properly designed and confirmed to support the entire filled weight of the aquarium. A cabinet that looks solid isn't necessarily built to carry a concentrated load of 100, 200 or several hundred kilograms continuously for years.

If a stand bows, twists or collapses, the consequences can be devastating—not only for your fish, but for flooring, carpets, furniture and potentially anyone standing nearby.

Check That Everything Is Level

Before filling the aquarium, check that both the floor and stand are level and stable.

This becomes particularly important as tanks get larger.

An aquarium that isn't sitting correctly can place uneven stress on the glass and joins. Don't wait until several hundred kilograms of water are inside it to discover that the stand rocks or the floor isn't level.

Take the time to get this right while the aquarium is empty.

What About Polystyrene Under the Tank?

Traditionally, many glass aquariums were placed on a sheet of polystyrene or aquarium foam. This helps accommodate tiny surface irregularities and provides even support beneath tanks designed to sit on their entire base.

However, not every modern aquarium is designed this way.

Some tanks have frames, raised or floating bases, or manufacturer-specific support requirements. Placing foam or polystyrene underneath a tank that wasn't designed for it may be unnecessary or potentially inappropriate.

Always follow the aquarium manufacturer's instructions.

If your particular aquarium requires a cushioning mat, use the recommended aquarium foam, polystyrene or purpose-made mat of the appropriate thickness rather than improvising.

Choose the Location Carefully

Once filled, your aquarium isn't going anywhere easily, so choose its position before you begin.

Avoid placing it where it receives strong direct sunlight for long periods, as this can contribute to excessive algae growth and unwanted temperature fluctuations.

Keep it away from areas where household sprays, fly sprays, perfumes, cleaning products or other airborne chemicals are regularly used. We'll look more closely at why these can be dangerous later in this guide.

You'll also need easy access to power and enough room around the aquarium to maintain the filter, clean the glass and perform water changes comfortably.

And never attempt to move an aquarium while it's full.

Even a relatively small tank becomes enormously heavy once filled, and lifting or twisting it can place tremendous stress on the glass and silicone joins.

Get the foundations right first.

Your fish will depend on everything you build from here.

Creating a Natural Environment

Now that your aquarium is safely positioned, it's time for the enjoyable part—creating the environment your fish will eventually call home.

My preference has always been to keep an aquarium as natural as possible.

That doesn't mean you need to recreate an exact riverbed or spend a fortune on specialist aqua scaping materials. It simply means choosing materials that are safe, functional and suited to the animals and plants you're planning to keep.

Think natural gravel or sand, live aquatic plants, aquarium-safe rocks and driftwood, with plenty of open swimming space.

You're creating a habitat, not decorating a fishbowl.

Start With the Substrate

For most beginner tropical community tanks, natural aquarium gravel is an excellent choice.

Choose smooth, appropriately sized gravel from a reputable aquarium supplier rather than brightly painted or coated decorative stones. Fish—particularly bottom dwellers—spend a great deal of time investigating the substrate, and I prefer to avoid unnecessary paints and coatings in an environment where animals will live every hour of their lives.

Fine aquarium sand can also be a good choice, particularly for species such as Corydoras that naturally forage along the bottom. If you're planning your fish community before setting up the tank—as I strongly recommend—you can choose the substrate to suit the fish rather than trying to change it later.

Whatever you choose, wash it thoroughly before it goes anywhere near your aquarium.

This is one of those seemingly insignificant jobs that can save a lot of frustration later.

Put manageable amounts of gravel into a clean bucket used only for aquarium purposes, run clean water through it and gently stir the gravel with your hand. Tip the dirty water away and repeat.

And repeat.

And probably repeat again.

You'll often be surprised by just how much fine dust comes out of a bag of apparently clean aquarium gravel.

Continue until the rinse water is reasonably clear.

Even after thorough washing, a newly filled aquarium may initially look slightly cloudy. Don't immediately assume something has gone wrong. Fine particles can remain suspended when the water is first added and, with a correctly sized filter running, this initial haze will often settle or be filtered out within several hours.

Persistent cloudiness—or a tank that suddenly becomes milky later—is a different matter and may indicate something other than substrate dust. We'll talk about water quality and the biological cycle shortly.

How Much Substrate?

You don't need an enormous mountain of gravel.

For a planted community aquarium, aim for enough depth to support the types of rooted plants you intend to grow while still allowing easy maintenance. Around 5–7 cm is a useful starting point for many planted tanks, although the ideal depth depends on the plants and substrate you're using.

You can slope it slightly higher towards the back of the aquarium if you like. This creates depth visually and gives larger rooted plants a little more substrate without creating an unnecessarily deep layer across the entire tank.

If you're using sand, avoid excessively deep, compacted areas unless you understand how to manage them. The goal is a healthy substrate, not simply the deepest one possible.

Rocks, Driftwood and Natural Hiding Places

Fish need more than open water.

Plants, wood and rocks create hiding places, territories and visual barriers that can help fish feel secure.

But natural-looking doesn't automatically mean aquarium-safe.

Don't simply collect a beautiful rock from the garden, a branch from the bush or a piece of driftwood from the beach and drop it into your aquarium.

Different rocks can alter water chemistry, while untreated or unidentified wood may rot, release unwanted substances or introduce contaminants. Items collected outdoors may also have been exposed to pesticides, fertilisers, oils, salt or other substances you can't see.

The safest option for a beginner is to purchase rock and driftwood intended specifically for aquarium use from a reputable aquarium supplier.

Clean, unglazed terracotta pots can also make simple hiding places for some species. Make sure there are no sharp edges, and if using a broken pot, smooth any rough areas before it goes into the aquarium.

Avoid metal objects, painted ornaments that aren't specifically aquarium-safe and anything with small holes that a curious fish could become trapped inside.

And be particularly cautious with shells, coral and some types of limestone in a freshwater community aquarium. These materials can raise hardness and pH, which may be completely inappropriate for the species you're keeping.

The same applies to crystals and decorative stones. Something being "natural" doesn't automatically make it suitable for an aquarium.

What About Pirate Ships and Castles?

Children—and plenty of adults—love decorating aquariums.

There's nothing wrong with having a castle, pirate ship or quirky ornament if that's what makes the aquarium enjoyable for your family.

Just choose decorations specifically manufactured for aquarium use by a reputable supplier.

Check them periodically for damaged surfaces, sharp edges or areas where fish could become trapped.

A natural aquarium doesn't have to look like an untouched rainforest stream.

It simply needs to provide a safe, healthy environment that puts the needs of the fish first.

Live Plants: More Than Decoration

If there's one thing I'd encourage in almost every tropical community aquarium, it's live plants.

They transform an aquarium.

Not simply because they look beautiful, but because they become part of the living environment.

During photosynthesis, aquatic plants release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. They also take up nutrients from the water, provide surfaces where microorganisms and algae can grow, offer shelter to shy fish and fry, and create shaded areas where fish can retreat when they want to feel secure.

For some fish, plants also provide opportunities for natural grazing and exploration.

They won't replace a filter, proper feeding or regular water changes, but they can contribute enormously to a stable, natural-feeling aquarium.

Before Adding New Plants

Even plants purchased from a reputable aquarium shop should be checked before adding them to your tank.

Gently rinse new plants in a separate bucket of clean, aquarium-safe water and inspect them carefully. Look over the leaves—particularly the undersides—as well as stems and roots for unwanted hitchhikers such as small snails or clusters of snail eggs. Remove anything you find before the plant goes into the aquarium.

Snails aren't necessarily harmful, and some aquarists deliberately keep them, but accidentally introducing one or two can sometimes result in a much larger population, particularly where excess food is available.

I'd also avoid transferring the water that the plants travelled or were displayed in directly into your aquarium. Once you've inspected and rinsed the plants, place the plants, not the shop water, into your tank.

For a beginner community aquarium, I prefer this careful rinse-and-inspect approach rather than automatically treating every new plant with chemicals.

Good Plants for Beginners

You don't need rare or difficult plants to create a beautiful tropical tank.

Java fern is one of my favourites for beginners. Rather than burying its rhizome in the gravel, attach it to aquarium-safe wood or rock and allow it to establish naturally.

Anubias is another hardy choice, and, like Java fern, its rhizome should generally remain above the substrate. It grows slowly, tolerates relatively modest lighting and creates lovely broad leaves for fish to explore around.

Vallisneria is excellent for creating taller growth towards the back of an aquarium. Its long ribbon-like leaves create cover while still allowing fish to swim between them.

Cryptocoryne, or "crypts", can work beautifully through the middle and foreground depending on the variety. Once established, many are relatively undemanding.

Amazon swords can make striking feature plants, although they become quite large and are better suited to tanks with enough room for their root systems and mature leaves.

Java moss is useful around wood and rocks and provides wonderful fine cover, particularly for tiny fish and fry.

Floating plants can also create gentle shade and help nervous fish feel secure, but don't allow them to completely cover the surface. Other plants still need light, and you need good gas exchange at the water's surface.

Plant With the Fish in Mind

Try not to fill every centimetre with plants simply because you can.

Create denser planted areas around the back and sides, provide hiding places and visual barriers, but leave open areas for swimming.

Different fish use space differently.

A small schooling species may enjoy moving together through open mid-water before darting back among the plants. Gouramis often appreciate vegetation and calmer areas near the surface. Corydoras need access to open substrate where they can forage naturally.

This is why planning your fish before finishing the aquascape makes such a difference.

You're not just deciding where a plant looks attractive.

You're designing the environment around the natural behaviour of the animals that will eventually live there.

Give Plants Time Too

Don't worry if a newly planted aquarium doesn't immediately look like the lush display tank you saw at the aquarium shop.

Plants need time to settle, establish roots and begin growing.

Some plants may even lose older leaves after being introduced to a new aquarium as they adjust to different water conditions or transition from leaves grown above water to leaves better suited to submerged growth.

Remove genuinely dying material, give healthy plants appropriate light and nutrients, and be patient.

A natural aquarium gets better with time.

And that's an important lesson for the entire tank.

A healthy aquarium isn't something you assemble in an afternoon. It's something you allow to develop.

Lighting, Heating and Filtration

With your substrate, natural features and live plants in place, the next step is creating stable conditions for the little ecosystem you're building.

Lighting, heating and filtration all have different jobs, but they work together to create an environment where plants can grow, beneficial microorganisms can establish and, eventually, fish can thrive.

The key word is stability.

Fish can often cope with small natural variations. What they don't cope with nearly as well are sudden swings in temperature or water quality.

Lighting: Creating a Natural Day and Night

Aquarium lighting isn't simply there so we can see the fish.

Live plants need appropriate light for photosynthesis, while fish benefit from having a predictable period of light and darkness.

For a straightforward planted beginner aquarium, around 6–8 hours of light each day is often a sensible starting point. A timer makes this much easier and gives the aquarium a consistent routine.

More light isn't necessarily better.

Leaving aquarium lights on from early morning until bedtime can encourage excessive algae without providing any real benefit to the fish. Likewise, there's no need to leave the aquarium light on overnight.

Fish need darkness too.

If algae begins taking over, don't immediately reach for an algaecide. Look at the reason it's flourishing. Excessive light, too many nutrients, overfeeding or an imbalance in the aquarium may all contribute.

Whenever possible, correct the cause rather than adding another chemical to the water.

Heating: Consistency Matters

Most commonly kept tropical community fish require heated water, but there is no single perfect temperature for every tropical species.

This is another reason fish should be chosen for compatibility, not simply appearance.

Many popular tropical community species are comfortable somewhere around 24–26°C but always research the requirements of the particular fish you intend to keep.

Choose an aquarium heater suitable for the volume of water and use a separate aquarium thermometer so you can actually check the temperature rather than simply trusting the number on the heater dial.

Position the heater where water can circulate around it effectively, following the manufacturer's instructions.

In cooler weather, check the temperature regularly. In an Australian summer, however, the opposite problem can occur. Aquarium water can become too warm, particularly in rooms without air-conditioning or where a tank receives direct sunlight.

Stable doesn't mean hot.

It means keeping the water within the appropriate range for the animals you're keeping.

Filtration: The Heart of the Aquarium

A filter isn't simply a machine that removes visible dirt.

One of its most important roles is providing a home for the beneficial microorganisms that help process fish waste.

A good aquarium filter generally provides three types of filtration to varying degrees.

Mechanical filtration traps suspended particles such as uneaten food, plant debris and waste.

Biological filtration provides surfaces where beneficial bacteria can colonise. These microorganisms are fundamental to the nitrogen cycle and ultimately help convert highly toxic waste products into less harmful forms.

Chemical filtration, such as activated carbon or other specialised media, can be useful in particular circumstances, but it isn't necessarily something every natural community aquarium needs to run continuously.

For a healthy established aquarium, biological filtration is the part I particularly don't want beginners to underestimate.

Your filter isn't just cleaning the water.

It's alive.

How Powerful Should the Filter Be?

Rather than relying entirely on wording such as “suitable for tanks up to 100 litres”, look at the manufacturer's stated flow rate, usually expressed as litres per hour (L/h).

For a typical tropical community aquarium, a useful starting point is a filter capable of circulating roughly four to six times the aquarium's water volume each hour.

As a rough guide:

  • A 60 L aquarium: around 240–360 L/h
  • A 75 L aquarium: around 300–450 L/h
  • A 100 L aquarium: around 400–600 L/h
  • A 120 L aquarium: around 480–720 L/h
  • A 150 L aquarium: around 600–900 L/h
  • A 200 L aquarium: around 800–1,200 L/h

These figures are a guide rather than an absolute rule.

Manufacturer flow ratings are generally measured under favourable conditions. Once filter media is installed and begins collecting debris, actual flow can be lower. The type of filter, amount of media, positioning and the needs of your fish all matter.

And don't fall into the trap of thinking the strongest possible current is automatically best.

Some fish appreciate water movement. Others, including many gouramis and long-finned or slower-moving species, prefer calmer areas and can become stressed if they're constantly fighting against a powerful current.

You want effective circulation throughout the aquarium without turning it into a washing machine.

Why a Bigger Filter Doesn't Justify More Fish

It's tempting to think:

"I'll buy a bigger filter, so I can put more fish in the tank."

Unfortunately, it doesn't work quite like that.

Every fish produces waste. Uneaten food and decaying plant material add to the biological load too.

A good filter helps the aquarium process that waste, but it doesn't create unlimited capacity.

Overcrowding can lead to deteriorating water quality, increased nitrate accumulation, greater competition for oxygen and territory, and increased stress. Stressed fish are also more vulnerable to illness.

Fish need physical space to swim and behave naturally as well as clean water.

A bigger filter is useful.

It isn't permission to overcrowd.

Don’t Clean Your Filter Too Well

This sounds completely backwards until you understand what’s living inside it.

A mature filter contains colonies of beneficial bacteria, particularly throughout its biological media and sponges. These microorganisms are an essential part of the biological system keeping your aquarium stable.

That’s why filter maintenance should be about restoring good water flow—not making everything look brand new.

Rather than cleaning the filter simply because a certain number of weeks have passed, watch how it is performing. If the flow has noticeably decreased, the intake is becoming clogged or the mechanical media is collecting excessive debris, it’s probably time for some maintenance.

During a routine water change, keep some of the water you’ve removed from the aquarium in a clean, aquarium-only bucket. Reusable filter sponges and appropriate biological media can then be gently swished or squeezed in this water to remove excess debris.

Avoid routinely scrubbing biological media clean or replacing everything at once. If media genuinely needs replacing, doing it gradually helps preserve the established bacterial colony.

Be particularly cautious about thoroughly rinsing established biological media under untreated chlorinated tap water. Chlorine and chloramine are designed to control microorganisms—which are precisely what you’re trying to protect.

There isn’t one perfect filter-cleaning timetable. A lightly stocked, well-planted aquarium may need attention far less frequently than a heavily stocked tank producing considerably more waste.

Get to know what normal flow looks like in your own aquarium and let its performance guide you.

And remember filter maintenance doesn’t replace regular partial water changes. Even an excellent filter can’t remove everything that gradually accumulates in a closed aquarium.

Give the Filter Time to Become Alive

A brand-new filter may move water beautifully, but biologically, it is still immature.

Those vital colonies of beneficial bacteria need time to establish.

And this is where many new aquariums go wrong.

The tank looks beautiful.
The water looks clear.
The filter is running.

So, the fish go in.

But clear water doesn’t necessarily mean safe water.

Before we choose a single fish for our community, we need to understand what happens to their waste after it enters the water.

That brings us to one of the most important concepts in fishkeeping:

the nitrogen cycle.

The Nitrogen Cycle: Why a New Tank Isn't Ready for Fish Yet

Your aquarium is filled. The plants are in. The heater is maintaining a steady temperature. The filter is running beautifully, and the water looks crystal clear.

Surely, it’s ready for fish?

Not quite.

One of the most important parts of setting up a new aquarium is allowing its biological filtration to establish. This process is commonly known as cycling the aquarium, and understanding it may be the single most important thing you learn as a new fish keeper.

The Nitrogen CycleWhat Happens When Fish Produce Waste?

Fish constantly release waste into their environment. Uneaten food, faeces and decaying plant material add more organic matter.

As this material breaks down, ammonia is produced—and ammonia is highly toxic to fish.

Fortunately, in a mature aquarium, naturally occurring beneficial bacteria help process it.

One group of microorganisms converts ammonia into nitrite, which is also highly toxic to fish.

Another group then converts nitrite into nitrate, which is considerably less toxic at the concentrations normally maintained in a healthy freshwater community aquarium.

In simple terms:

The problem with a brand-new aquarium is that these bacterial colonies aren’t established yet. The filter may be circulating water perfectly, but biologically the aquarium is still immature.

Clear Water Can Still Be Dangerous

You cannot judge water quality simply by looking at it.

An aquarium can be sparkling clean and still contain dangerous levels of ammonia or nitrite. That’s why a basic freshwater test kit measuring ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH is one of the most useful pieces of equipment you can own.

You’re not testing because fishkeeping needs to become a chemistry lesson. You’re testing because these invisible changes can become dangerous before the fish show obvious signs of distress.

Cycling Without Sacrificing Fish

Years ago, it was common to set up an aquarium and add a few supposedly “hardy” fish to get the biological cycle started.

Those fish were essentially being used to produce the ammonia needed to establish the bacterial colony.

Some survived. Some didn’t.

We can do better than that.

A fishless cycle allows the biological filter to establish before the aquarium is stocked, rather than exposing live fish to potentially harmful ammonia and nitrite while the tank matures.

There are different ways of carrying out a fishless cycle, including using a controlled ammonia source and, if desired, an appropriate reputable bacterial starter culture.

Whichever method you choose, don’t simply add a product and assume the aquarium is ready.

Test the water and let the results tell you what is happening.

During cycling, you should eventually see evidence that ammonia is being processed, followed by nitrite, and ultimately nitrate.

The aquarium is biologically ready for its first carefully selected inhabitants only when the filter can reliably process the ammonia being introduced and both ammonia and nitrite return to zero within the expected timeframe for the cycling method you’re using.

Cycling isn’t about waiting an arbitrary number of days.

It’s about establishing a functioning biological system.

How Long Does Cycling Take?

This is where patience comes in.

A new aquarium commonly takes several weeks to establish a dependable biological cycle, although the exact time varies with temperature, pH, the ammonia source, bacterial seeding and other conditions.

Be wary of anyone promising that every aquarium will be completely mature in a fixed number of days.

Products containing live bacterial cultures may help establish biological filtration more quickly when used correctly, but they don’t remove the need to monitor the water.

A bottle cannot see what’s happening inside your aquarium.

Your test results can.

What About pH?

pH tells us whether water is acidic, neutral or alkaline, and different fish have evolved to live in different water conditions.

But there’s a common beginner mistake here: chasing the “perfect” pH with chemical adjusters.

Constantly adding products to push pH up or down can create fluctuations that may be more stressful than stable water that sits slightly outside an ideal textbook number but is otherwise appropriate for the fish.

Before choosing your fish, find out the general characteristics of your local water supply and, wherever possible, choose species suited to those conditions.

Specialist species requiring substantially different water parameters are better left until you have more experience.

Where Does Nitrate Go?

Unlike ammonia and nitrite, nitrate tends to accumulate unless it is removed or used.

Live plants can take up some nitrogen compounds as nutrients, which is another reason they’re so valuable in a community aquarium.

But plants aren’t a licence to stop maintaining the tank.

Regular partial water changes help dilute nitrate and other dissolved substances that gradually accumulate. The amount and frequency will depend on stocking, feeding, plant growth and your test results, but around 20–30% weekly is a practical starting point for many community aquariums.

You generally don’t need to empty the entire aquarium and scrub everything clean.

A mature aquarium should become a living, functioning system—not something repeatedly sterilised back to day one.

Treating New Tap Water

Municipal tap water may contain chlorine or chloramine to make it safe for people to drink, but these disinfectants can be harmful to aquatic life and the beneficial microorganisms we’re trying to protect.

This is one situation where an appropriate aquarium water conditioner has an important purpose.

Treat replacement tap water according to the product instructions and try to match its temperature reasonably closely to the aquarium to avoid sudden changes.

Keeping an aquarium naturally doesn’t mean refusing every aquarium product.

It means understanding why you’re using something and using only what is genuinely necessary.

Don’t Try to Fix Every Number with a Bottle

Aquarium shops contain products promising to clear water, alter pH, remove algae, boost bacteria and solve almost every imaginable problem.

Some have legitimate uses.

But before adding anything, ask:

Why is this happening?

If nitrate is continually high, are there too many fish? Are you overfeeding? Are water changes adequate? Is decaying material accumulating?

Adding a product may change what you can see without addressing the cause.

A test kit, careful observation and patience will often tell you far more than another bottle on the shelf.

Don’t Rush to Fill the Tank

Once the aquarium is properly cycled, it’s incredibly tempting to head to the aquarium shop and come home with every fish on your wish list.

Don’t.

Your biological filter has established itself to process a particular amount of waste. Suddenly adding a large number of fish dramatically increases that load.

Stock the aquarium gradually, continue testing the water and give the biological system time to adjust as the population increases.

It also gives you time to observe how each species settles in before introducing the next.

And now we reach one of the most enjoyable parts of setting up a tropical aquarium:

Choosing Fish for a Balanced Community Aquarium

 

This is the part most people have been waiting for.


The aquarium is established, the plants are beginning to settle, the filter is biologically ready and now, finally, we can start thinking about fish. But this is also where one of the most common mistakes happens.

People walk into an aquarium shop, see half a dozen beautiful species and think, “I'll have two of those, three of those and one of those...”

Before long, they've created a collection of fish rather than a community.

A successful community aquarium isn't about fitting as many different species as possible into one tank. It's about choosing fish that can comfortably share the same environment.

 

Compatibility Is About More Than Temperament

When we call a fish “peaceful”, it doesn't automatically mean it will live happily with every other peaceful fish.

Before combining species, consider their adult size, preferred temperature and water conditions, activity level, temperament, swimming space and social needs.

Some fish need to live in schools. Others prefer pairs, small groups or territories of their own. Some spend most of their lives close to the surface, others occupy the middle of the aquarium, while bottom dwellers spend much of their time exploring the substrate.

Then there are differences in feeding.

A slow, shy fish can easily miss out when housed with fast, enthusiastic feeders.

The aim is to choose fish whose needs complement one another rather than simply fish that look attractive together.

 

Think in Levels: Top, Middle and Bottom

One of the easiest ways to create a beautiful, interesting community aquarium is to think about where each species naturally spends its time.
Rather than crowding ten different species into the same swimming area, you can create a community that uses the aquarium from top to bottom.

Fish feeder levelsUpper Levels

Gouramis are a lovely example of fish that often spend considerable time around the upper and middle areas of the aquarium. They appreciate planted environments, including some surface cover, and many of the smaller species can work beautifully in a peaceful community.

However, gouramis vary enormously. A Honey Gourami is a very different proposition from a much larger Blue or Three-spot Gourami, so don't assume that all fish carrying the same general name have the same requirements.

Middle Levels

This is where schooling fish can really bring an aquarium to life.

Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, many rasboras and other small schooling species look far more natural—and generally feel more secure—when they're kept in an appropriate group rather than as one or two individuals.

A school of eight or ten compatible small fish moving together through plants is often far more beautiful than eight unrelated fish swimming independently.

Always check the needs of the particular species, because minimum group sizes, adult size, activity and water preferences vary.

Bottom Levels

Corydoras are among my favourite community fish, but there's one misconception I'd particularly like to clear up.

Bottom dwellers are not aquarium cleaners.

Corydoras may happily forage around the substrate looking for morsels of food, but that doesn't mean they can survive on whatever happens to fall past the other fish. They need an appropriate diet of their own.

They're also social fish. Rather than buying “a couple of Corys to clean the bottom”, choose a suitable species and keep a proper group—generally around six or more of the same species where tank size allows.

A smooth sand or fine, rounded substrate is particularly lovely for Corydoras because you can watch them display their natural foraging behaviour without damaging their delicate barbels.

Bristle nose catfish can also be excellent community inhabitants in appropriately sized aquariums, but again, they aren't maintenance equipment. They require their own food, hiding places and suitable wood, and they produce waste just like every other fish.

An algae-eating fish doesn't make algae disappear from the biological system. It simply turns some of it into fish waste.

Livebearers: Colourful, Hardy—and Prolific

Platies can be wonderful community fish. They're colourful, active and generally quite robust, which makes them attractive to beginners.

But there's something aquarium shops don't always emphasise enough.

Livebearers breed. A lot.

Put males and females together and your carefully planned community can become overcrowded surprisingly quickly.

Swordtails are another popular livebearer, but they're larger and more active than many beginners realise and deserve more swimming room than a small two-foot aquarium can comfortably provide.

Guppies can also work in some community setups, but their long fins, breeding behaviour and preferred water conditions need to be considered when choosing tank mates.

Never buy a fish simply because it's labelled “community”. Find out what it will be like as an adult.

A Beginner-Friendly Two-Foot Community

Let's put all of this into practice.

The term two-foot tank describes length rather than volume, so capacities vary considerably. For this example, let's imagine a well-planted aquarium of approximately 60–75 litres, properly cycled and filtered.

Rather than trying to squeeze five or six species into it, I'd keep the community simple.
One possible combination could be:

1 Honey Gourami
8–10 Neon Tetras
6 small Corydoras of the same suitable species

That's only three species, but visually the aquarium would be anything but boring.

The Honey Gourami provides an individual focal fish around the upper and middle areas. The Neon Tetras form a moving school through the mid-water, while the Corydoras explore the bottom.
Most importantly, each species gets to behave more naturally.

I'd plant the back and sides with taller plants such as Vallisneria, include Java fern or Anubias attached to aquarium-safe wood or rock, add some Cryptocoryne through the middle and leave open substrate at the front for the Corydoras to forage.

A little floating vegetation can provide additional security for the gourami, provided the surface isn't completely covered.

Now we have a community designed around the fish—not fish forced into a design.

Could I Add Platies as Well?

This is where restraint matters.

You might look at that aquarium and think: “Surely there's room for three platies too?”

Physically, perhaps. But every additional fish increases waste and places more demand on the biological system. Platies also occupy much of the same swimming area, are active feeders and, if both sexes are present, may quickly produce young.

I'd rather see three species thriving than six species merely fitting.

If you particularly love platies, we could build a different 60–75 litre community around them rather than adding them as an afterthought.

What About a Three-Foot Aquarium?

Move up to a three-foot aquarium of roughly 120–150 litres—again depending on actual dimensions—and your options expand considerably. You have more swimming room, greater water volume and the opportunity to create larger schools or accommodate species that simply need more space.

For example, a planted community might be built around:

1 suitable feature gourami or a compatible pair depending on species
12–15 small schooling tetras or rasboras
6–8 Corydoras
1 Bristle nose catfish

Depending on the exact aquarium, water parameters and species selected, you may then have scope for another compatible group—but I wouldn't decide that on day one.
Let the aquarium mature.

Watch how the existing fish use the space. Monitor nitrate and general water quality. Then decide whether the tank genuinely needs anything else.

Quite often, it doesn't.

Add Fish Slowly

Even after a proper fishless cycle, resist the temptation to buy the entire community in one afternoon.

Introduce your fish gradually and continue monitoring ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as the biological filter adjusts to the increasing waste load.

Adding fish slowly also gives you time to observe how each species settles into the aquarium and how the community behaves before introducing anything else.

If possible, a separate quarantine tank is an excellent precaution for new arrivals, particularly as you become more established in the hobby.

Always Think About the Adult Fish

Buy for the fish your new arrival will become—not simply the little fish swimming in the aquarium shop today.

Before bringing any species home, make sure you know its adult size, social needs, temperament, diet, preferred water conditions and how much swimming space it will eventually require.

Ask yourself one particularly important question:

Will this fish still belong in this aquarium when it is fully grown?

Five minutes of research before buying can prevent years of problems afterwards.

Build an Ecosystem, Not a Fish Collection

A beautiful community aquarium doesn’t need dozens of species.

In fact, some of the most striking contain relatively few: a feature fish, a proper school, a social group of bottom dwellers, healthy plants and plenty of room to move.

When you stop asking, “What else can I fit in?” and start asking, “What does this community need?”, you begin thinking like a fish keeper rather than a fish collector.

And that’s when a tropical aquarium really starts to come alive.

Feeding a Tropical Community: Variety Really Is the Spice of Life

Walk down the aquarium aisle and you’ll find shelves filled with flakes, pellets, wafers and granules. A good-quality prepared fish food can certainly form part of a healthy diet, but I don’t believe any animal should spend its entire life eating exactly the same processed food day after day.

Different tropical fish have different nutritional needs. In the wild, their diets may include aquatic insects and larvae, tiny crustaceans, algae, plant material, microorganisms and other small food sources.

The aim isn’t to reproduce a wild diet perfectly, but to provide appropriate variety while making sure every species in the aquarium actually gets something to eat.

Foods for tropical fishStart With a Good-Quality Staple Food

Choose a quality tropical flake, micro-pellet or granule appropriate for the size and species of fish you’re keeping. Read the ingredients rather than assuming the most expensive container is automatically the best.

Prepared foods are useful because they’re formulated to provide a broad range of nutrients but think of them as the foundation of the diet rather than necessarily the entire menu.

Food also comes in different forms for a reason. Floating or slowly sinking foods suit many surface and mid-water feeders, while sinking pellets and wafers allow bottom dwellers to receive food intended specifically for them.

How Much Should You Feed?

Overfeeding is one of the easiest ways to upset an aquarium.

For flakes, pellets or granules, offer only a small amount at first. Most should be actively eaten within roughly one to two minutes.

If everything disappears almost immediately and the fish are still actively searching, offer a tiny amount more rather than tipping in a large quantity at once.

Fish quickly learn that the person approaching the aquarium may mean food. Their enthusiasm isn’t necessarily evidence that they’re starving.

Watch where the food goes. If significant amounts are falling untouched into the substrate or disappearing behind decorations, you’re probably offering too much.

Uneaten food eventually decomposes, adding unnecessary waste to the aquarium.

Feed the fish, not the filter.

Don’t Forget the Bottom Dwellers

Corydoras and catfish shouldn’t have to survive on whatever the other fish leave behind.

Once the faster fish have eaten, make sure your bottom dwellers receive an appropriate sinking food of their own. Depending on the species, this might include quality sinking pellets or wafers along with suitable fresh or frozen foods.

Bristle nose catfish can also benefit from vegetable matter and appropriate sinking foods. Aquarium-safe natural wood is important in many Bristle nose setups too, providing grazing surfaces and supporting natural behaviour.

They may eat algae, but algae alone is not a complete diet.

Fresh Vegetables

Some tropical fish, particularly many livebearers and herbivorous or omnivorous catfish, enjoy suitable vegetables as part of a varied diet.

Zucchini is an excellent option. Cut a thin slice, blanch it briefly to soften it, allow it to cool and secure it with an aquarium vegetable clip or another aquarium-safe method.

Peas can also be offered occasionally. Cook a frozen pea until soft, allow it to cool, remove the outer skin and squash the centre into pieces appropriate for the size of the fish.

Small amounts of blanched spinach or green beans may also suit some species.

Vegetables aren’t appropriate as a major food for every tropical fish, so always match them to the species you’re keeping.

Remove uneaten vegetables after a few hours, or sooner if they begin breaking apart. A piece of zucchini slowly decomposing in the corner isn’t contributing to a healthy aquarium.

Frozen and Live Foods

Reputable aquarium shops commonly stock frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia and mysis shrimp.

Many omnivorous and insect-eating community fish relish these foods, and they’re a wonderful way to add variety.

For a small community aquarium, an entire frozen cube may be far more than the fish need. I prefer thawing a small portion in a clean container with a little aquarium water and feeding it gradually.

Live foods such as bloodworms, daphnia or brine shrimp can also encourage natural hunting and feeding behaviour, but source them carefully from a reputable aquarium supplier.

Collecting insect larvae or other creatures from random ponds, drains or waterways risks introducing parasites, pathogens or contaminants.

Variety is valuable.

Introducing something unknown from the local drain isn’t.

How Often Should You Feed?

For many healthy adult tropical community fish, one or two small feeds each day is generally sufficient, depending on the species.

Young growing fish, fry and specialist species may require different feeding schedules.

I’d much rather see a beginner feed a little less and observe the fish than continually add food because they’re worried someone might still be hungry.

A healthy fish should be active and well-conditioned—not continually bloated after every meal.

Let Them Forage

One of the benefits of a mature, planted aquarium is that it provides opportunities for natural behaviour between meals.

Fish may investigate plant leaves, wood, substrate and other surfaces for tiny organisms, algae and edible material.

This doesn’t replace a balanced diet, but it gives them something a sterile aquarium never can—the opportunity to forage.

Food shouldn’t only keep an animal alive.

Whenever possible, feeding should also allow it to behave naturally.

A Simple Weekly Feeding Pattern

You don’t need a complicated feeding calendar.

For a typical omnivorous community, a quality prepared staple can be offered on most days, with a small frozen or live food meal once or twice during the week and suitable vegetable matter for species that benefit from it.

You don’t need flakes, pellets, bloodworms and zucchini at the same sitting.

Variety means varying the diet over time—not creating a banquet every evening.

Always adapt the menu to the fish in front of you. A Neon Tetra, Honey Gourami, Corydoras and Bristle nose don’t have identical dietary needs simply because they’re all tropical fish.

What About Homemade Fish Food?

You can make simple frozen foods at home, but fresh ingredients aren’t automatically nutritionally complete.

For an omnivorous community, a small mixture of finely chopped or blended blanched zucchini, shelled cooked peas and a little plain seafood such as prawn can be frozen thinly in a clean tray or freezer bag.

Break off only a tiny amount, thaw it and offer it occasionally.

Don’t add salt, seasoning, oils, sauces or other flavourings.

Homemade food is best used to add variety rather than completely replace a quality balanced staple food.

Watch your fish eat.

You’ll soon notice which individuals race to the surface, which wait for food to sink, which forage along the bottom, and which are pushed aside by more assertive tank mates.

If one fish is becoming plump while another is becoming thin, simply adding more food may not be the answer. You may need to change where, when or what you feed so every level of the community gets its share.

Good feeding isn’t measured by how much food goes into the aquarium.

It’s measured by how well the fish are doing.

Keeping the Aquarium Clean Without Sterilising It

Once your tropical aquarium is established, maintenance shouldn’t mean pulling everything apart and scrubbing it until it looks brand new.

A mature aquarium is alive. Beneficial microorganisms live throughout the filter, substrate and other surfaces. The aim is to remove excess waste and maintain healthy water conditions without continually disrupting the ecosystem you’ve worked to establish.

Regular Partial Water Changes

For many tropical community aquariums, a 20–30% partial water change each week is a sensible starting point, although stocking levels, feeding, plant growth and water-test results should ultimately guide you.

Use a clean bucket kept exclusively for aquarium use, and treat replacement tap water with an appropriate water conditioner where necessary for chlorine or chloramine. Try to keep the new water reasonably close to the aquarium’s temperature to avoid sudden changes.

Regular partial water changes help remove nitrate and other dissolved substances that gradually accumulate while maintaining the stability of the aquarium.

Cleaning the Gravel

This is where a simple aquarium siphon or gravel vacuum becomes incredibly useful.

As you remove water, gently siphon fish waste, uneaten food and decaying plant material from accessible areas of the substrate.

You don’t need to disturb every centimetre of gravel each week. In a planted aquarium, work carefully around roots and established plants, concentrating on open areas where debris tends to collect.

If you’re using sand, don’t plunge the gravel vacuum deeply into it as you would with coarse gravel. Much of the debris sits on the surface and can be gently siphoned away without removing half your substrate with it.

And don’t panic if the bottom of a mature planted aquarium isn’t clinically spotless.

A natural aquarium isn’t supposed to be sterile.

Cleaning the Glass

A little algae on aquarium glass is perfectly normal.

Use an aquarium-safe algae pad, scraper or magnetic cleaner when necessary, and keep these items exclusively for aquarium use.

Never spray ordinary glass cleaner directly onto or around the aquarium.

For the outside glass, a damp microfibre cloth followed by a dry one is often all you need. If you do use a cleaning product externally, apply it to the cloth well away from the aquarium rather than spraying it near the tank.

Don’t Declare War on Algae

A small amount of algae is part of a normal aquatic environment. It may grow on rocks, wood, glass and plant leaves, and some aquarium inhabitants will naturally graze on it.

If algae suddenly becomes excessive, however, look for the reason.

Are the lights on too long? Is the aquarium receiving direct sunlight? Are you overfeeding? Are nutrients accumulating? Are the plants struggling?

Correcting the underlying imbalance is usually a better long-term approach than continually adding chemicals to kill the algae you can see.

And remember, buying an “algae eater” isn’t automatically the solution. That fish has its own dietary, environmental and space requirements—and produces waste of its own.

Look After the Plants

Live plants need a little maintenance too.

Remove dead or decaying leaves before they break down extensively, trim plants that become overgrown and thin floating plants if they’re blocking too much light.

But don’t panic over every yellow leaf. Older leaves naturally die as new growth develops, and newly introduced plants may take time to adjust to submerged conditions.

Look at the health of the plant as a whole rather than reacting to every imperfect leaf.

Don’t Clean Everything on the Same Day

Avoid turning routine maintenance into a complete aquarium overhaul.

There’s rarely a need to aggressively vacuum the entire substrate, scrub every rock, heavily prune the plants and thoroughly clean the filter all at once.

Deal with what actually needs attention.

The more mature and stable your aquarium becomes, the more you’ll learn when to intervene—and when to leave it alone.

Never Use Soap or Detergent

Never use soap, detergent or ordinary household cleaning products on aquarium equipment or anything that will come into contact with the water.

Residues that seem insignificant to us can be dangerous to fish and aquatic life.

Keep buckets, siphons, nets, sponges and cleaning equipment specifically for aquarium use.

Your Fish Are Part of the Maintenance Check

Every time you maintain the aquarium, take a few moments to observe your fish.

Are they active and feeding normally? Are their fins open rather than clamped? Is anyone breathing unusually quickly, hiding unexpectedly or showing spots, wounds or damaged fins?

Has someone lost weight or suddenly become aggressive?

Good aquarium maintenance isn’t simply about keeping the tank attractive. It’s also an opportunity to notice small changes before they become bigger problems.

Over time, you’ll learn what’s normal for your aquarium and its inhabitants.

That’s when fishkeeping becomes less about following a rigid cleaning schedule and more about understanding the little world you’ve created.

Household Chemicals: The Hidden Danger Around Your Aquarium

One of the most easily overlooked risks to aquarium fish isn’t actually inside the tank.

It’s what we use around it.

An aquarium isn’t a completely sealed environment. The water surface exchanges gases with the surrounding air, which means sprays, fumes and residues used around the home can potentially find their way into the water.

Fish live and breathe in that water every moment of their lives, so it pays to be careful about what we use nearby.

Be Careful With Sprays

Fly sprays, insecticides, surface cleaners, furniture polish, air fresheners, deodorants, perfumes and hairsprays should never be sprayed near an aquarium.

Fine aerosol droplets can remain airborne and travel farther than you might expect.

Be particularly cautious with insecticides. If pest-control products, insect sprays or bombs are being used in the home, make sure the aquarium isn’t exposed to drifting spray or fumes.

Wherever practical, choose non-aerosol methods around areas where your animals live.

Products don’t have to be pesticides to warrant caution.

Plug-in air fresheners, scented candles, fragrance diffusers and essential-oil diffusers all release substances into the surrounding air, so I prefer not to use them close to an aquarium.

Essential oils may be natural, but natural doesn’t automatically mean safe for fish.

The same principle applies throughout this guide: if something doesn’t need to enter your aquarium environment, there’s little reason to expose your fish to it unnecessarily.

Think About Your Hands

Before putting your hands into aquarium water, think about what might be on them.

Hand cream, sunscreen, perfume, insect repellent, cleaning products, garden chemicals, paint and oils can potentially be transferred into the water.

Make sure your hands and forearms are thoroughly rinsed and free from residues before working in the aquarium. If you’ve recently handled strong chemicals, pesticides or oils, avoid putting your hands into the tank until you’re confident they’re completely clean.

And, of course, wash your hands after working in an aquarium too.

Renovating, Painting or Pest Control?

If you’re planning renovations, painting, floor refinishing, professional pest treatment or other work involving significant fumes or airborne chemicals, think about the aquarium before the work begins.

If using professional pest control, tell the company you have an aquarium and ask exactly what products will be used.

The appropriate precautions will depend on the chemical involved, so obtain specific advice rather than simply throwing a towel over the tank and assuming everything underneath is protected.

Smoke and Vaping

Cigarette smoke, vaping aerosols and other airborne pollutants don’t belong around an aquarium either.

The aquarium shares the air in your home, so keeping the surrounding environment clean benefits your fish as well.

Watch What Happens Above the Tank

Open-top aquariums deserve particular care.

Don’t position houseplants above them where fertilised water, soil or pesticide residues could drip into the aquarium. Be careful when cleaning nearby windows, shelves and walls, and never spray products over the tank assuming the lid will catch everything.

Even applying insect repellent or spraying perfume beside an open aquarium is worth thinking twice about.

If You Suspect Something Has Entered the Aquarium

If you know—or strongly suspect—that a potentially harmful substance has entered the water, don’t simply wait to see whether the fish become sick.

Remove the source if possible and seek prompt advice from an experienced aquarium professional or aquatic veterinarian about the particular contaminant involved.

Depending on what entered the aquarium, appropriate action may include substantial water changes or specialised filtration media such as activated carbon, but the response should be based on the contaminant rather than blindly adding more products.

Watch the fish closely for unusual behaviour such as rapid breathing, gasping, loss of balance, sudden lethargy or abnormal swimming.

Prevention is far easier than trying to undo chemical contamination afterwards.

A Simple Rule

Before spraying, applying or using anything close to your aquarium, ask yourself:

Could any of this end up in the water?

If the answer is yes—or even possibly—move it away from the tank.

Creating a natural aquarium isn’t only about what we deliberately put inside it.

It’s also about protecting that little environment from everything that doesn’t belong there.

Going Away on Holiday: Who Feeds the Fish?

Going away for a few days shouldn’t mean worrying constantly about what’s happening in your aquarium at home.

One of the biggest concerns people have is feeding.

“Who’s going to feed the fish?”

Yet one of the biggest risks while you’re away is often someone feeding them too much rather than too little.

Healthy adult tropical fish don’t necessarily need to be fed every single day. In a mature, planted aquarium, many will also spend time naturally foraging between meals.

That doesn’t mean we should abandon fish without food for extended periods, but it does mean there’s usually no need to panic about a short absence.

For many healthy adult community fish, a short absence of a couple of days generally doesn’t require any special feeding arrangements.

Give them their normal meal before you leave.

Don’t give them three times as much because you’re going away.

Fish can’t store a week’s worth of dinner simply because you’ve put it into the aquarium at once. Excess food will fall to the bottom, decompose and potentially create exactly the water-quality problem you’re trying to avoid.

Young fish, fry, sick fish and species with specialised dietary requirements are different and may require specific arrangements.

For Longer Holidays, Find a Reliable Fish Sitter

If you’re going away for longer, having a trusted person check the aquarium can be reassuring.

But don’t simply hand them the container of fish food and say, “Just give them a little bit every day.”

One person’s little bit can be very different from yours.

Pre-measure the food instead.

Small, labelled containers or a weekly pill organiser can work brilliantly. Put only the amount you want fed into each compartment and clearly mark the days.

If you don’t normally feed your adult fish every day, don’t suddenly instruct the sitter to do so simply because you’re away.

And make one instruction very clear:

If a portion has already been fed, don’t feed them again because they still look hungry.

Fish are extremely good at convincing people they haven’t eaten for weeks.

Automatic Feeders

A good-quality automatic feeder can be very useful, particularly if you’re away regularly.

But don’t buy one the day before your holiday, attach it to the aquarium and hope for the best.

Set it up at least several days before you leave and watch it operate.

Check how much food it actually releases, whether humidity causes the food to clump, whether the opening is positioned correctly and whether all of your fish are getting access to the food.

I’d rather discover a feeder is dispensing half the container while I’m standing beside the aquarium than while I’m hundreds of kilometres away.

Automatic feeders also work best with foods that dispense consistently. Flakes can sometimes behave differently from small pellets or granules, so test the actual food you intend to use.

What About Vacation Feeding Blocks?

Vacation or holiday feeding blocks have been sold for decades, and they’re certainly convenient.

Personally, they’re not my first choice.

Older-style blocks in particular could dissolve unpredictably, leave excess material in the aquarium or fail to release food as expected depending on water conditions. Products have improved over the years and formulations vary, but I still prefer a method where I have greater control over exactly how much food is entering the aquarium.

For a short holiday, healthy adult fish may not require additional feeding at all.

For a longer absence, I’d choose a tested automatic feeder or carefully pre-portioned food given by a reliable person before automatically reaching for a vacation block.

The goal isn’t to make sure there’s food sitting in the aquarium every minute you’re away.

It’s to keep the entire environment stable until you return.

Live Plants Help—but They’re Not a Holiday Feeder

A mature, planted aquarium provides opportunities for fish to graze on algae, biofilm and tiny organisms living among plants, wood and other surfaces.

But don’t assume that adding a few plants means your fish can feed themselves indefinitely.

Different species have different nutritional needs, so while live plants contribute to a healthy ecosystem, they don’t replace an appropriate diet during an extended absence.

Before You Leave

A little preparation can prevent a lot of problems.

A few days before your holiday, check that the heater, filter and lighting timer are working properly. Test the water and make sure everything is behaving normally.

Perform your usual partial water change if it’s due, remove excessive debris and trim any obviously dying plant material.

But don’t suddenly perform an enormous deep clean, replace all the filter media or make major changes to the aquarium the night before leaving.

You want to leave behind a stable aquarium, not one recovering from major intervention.

Make sure the water level is appropriate and consider evaporation if you’ll be away for an extended period, particularly in warm weather or with an open-top aquarium.

If someone will be checking the tank, show them what normal filter flow looks like and where the thermometer is. Leave your contact details and, if possible, the details of a trusted aquarium shop or experienced fish keeper they can contact if something genuinely goes wrong.

What Should Your Fish Sitter Watch For?

Keep the instructions simple.

Ask them to check that:

  • the filter is running
  • the heater appears to be operating normally
  • the aquarium hasn’t developed a leak
  • the fish are swimming and behaving normally
  • there are no dead fish that need to be removed
  • the temperature is within its usual range

They don’t need to become an aquarium expert while you’re away.

And unless you’ve specifically shown them what to do, I wouldn’t ask an inexperienced person to start changing water, cleaning filters or adding treatments because something “looks a bit funny”.

If there’s a problem, I’d much rather they call you or someone experienced before experimenting.

When You Come Home

Your first job isn’t to give everyone an enormous meal because you feel guilty.

Look at the aquarium first.

Check the temperature and filter and observe the fish. If you’ve been away for an extended period, test the water and then return to your normal feeding and maintenance routine.

If everything looks healthy, resist the urge to interfere simply because you’ve been away.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for a well-balanced aquarium is simply allow it to continue doing what it has been doing perfectly well without you.

A Healthy Aquarium Should Be Able to Cope With You Having a Holiday

One of the rewards of establishing a balanced tropical aquarium is that it shouldn’t require constant intervention.

Healthy fish, live plants, sensible stocking, mature biological filtration and good routines all help create a resilient aquarium.

Prepare properly, keep things simple and enjoy your holiday.

And remember:

While you’re away, overfeeding is usually a far greater risk than feeding a little less.

Common Tropical Aquarium Mistakes — and Why They Happen

Even with the best intentions, beginner fish keepers can make mistakes.

Most don’t happen because people don’t care. They happen because aquariums can be deceptive. The water may look crystal clear, the fish may appear hungry every time you walk past, and that tiny fish at the aquarium shop may look as though it could happily fit into your tank forever.

By now, we’ve covered the principles behind most of these problems in detail, so think of this section as a quick-reference guide to some of the most common mistakes—and what to do instead.

A new aquarium may look ready long before it is biologically ready.

Instead: Complete a proper fishless cycle, test the water and make sure the biological filtration is established before introducing fish.

Clear water doesn’t necessarily mean safe water.

Adding Too Many Fish at Once

Even a cycled aquarium needs time to adjust when its population increases.

Instead: Add fish gradually, monitor your water parameters and allow the biological filter to adjust before adding more.

And remember—a larger filter doesn’t magically create more living space.

Overcrowding the Aquarium

It’s incredibly easy to fall in love with another fish at the aquarium shop.

But every fish adds waste, requires space and affects the balance of the community.

Instead: Stock for the adult size and needs of the fish, not the size they happen to be when you buy them.

Sometimes the best decision you can make for your aquarium is to admire a beautiful fish at the shop—and leave it there.

Buying Fish Before Researching Them

A peaceful little juvenile can grow into a large, territorial adult. A fish sold alone may actually need a group. Another may require water conditions completely different from the fish already in your aquarium.

Instead: Research adult size, temperament, social needs, diet and water requirements before buying.

Choose fish because they belong in your aquarium—not simply because they caught your eye.

Keeping Schooling Fish in Pairs

Fish such as Neon Tetras and many other schooling species feel more secure when kept in appropriate groups.

Instead: Learn the social requirements of each species and provide a proper school where required.

A schooling fish shouldn’t have to live alone simply because one fish takes up less room.

Treating Bottom Dwellers as Clean-Up Crews

Corydoras, Bristle nose and other bottom-dwelling fish aren’t aquarium vacuum cleaners.

They have their own nutritional, social and environmental needs.

Instead: Feed them appropriate sinking foods and provide the habitat their species requires.

If you want less waste on the bottom of the aquarium, the answer is good maintenance—not another fish.

Overfeeding

This is one of the most common aquarium mistakes and one of the easiest to make.

Fish quickly learn to respond when you approach the tank, but enthusiastic begging doesn’t necessarily mean they need more food.

Instead: Feed small amounts, watch what is actually eaten and make sure food reaches the species living at different levels of the aquarium.

Remember:

Feed the fish, not the filter.

Feeding the Same Food Every Day

A container of flakes may be convenient, but different fish have different nutritional needs.

Instead: Start with a good-quality staple food and add appropriate variety over time, such as suitable vegetables, frozen or live foods and sinking foods for bottom dwellers.

Variety doesn’t mean a banquet at every meal.

Cleaning Too Much

A healthy aquarium shouldn’t be treated like a kitchen bench.

Aggressively cleaning the filter, substrate, decorations and glass all at once can disturb the biological system you’ve worked so hard to establish.

Instead: Maintain what actually needs attention and avoid trying to make the aquarium sterile.

Clean doesn’t have to mean lifeless.

Replacing All the Filter Media

Throwing away established filter media because it looks dirty can also mean throwing away a substantial part of the beneficial bacterial colony living within it.

Instead: Reusable media should generally be gently cleaned when necessary, and media that genuinely needs replacing should be changed gradually rather than all at once.

Your filter media doesn’t need to look new to be doing its job.

Chasing the “Perfect” pH

Constantly adding chemicals to force pH towards a particular number can create fluctuations that may be more stressful than stable, appropriate water.

Instead: Know your local water and choose fish suited to it wherever possible.

Stability is often more important than chasing a textbook number.

Leaving the Aquarium Light On Too Long

More light doesn’t necessarily mean healthier plants.

Excessive lighting can encourage algae and disrupt the aquarium’s natural day-and-night rhythm.

Instead: Use a timer and provide a consistent lighting period appropriate for your plants and aquarium. For many beginner planted tanks, around 6–8 hours a day is a sensible starting point.

That sunny window may look like the perfect place for an aquarium, but direct sunlight can contribute to algae growth and unwanted temperature fluctuations.

Instead: Position the aquarium away from direct sunlight, heaters, air conditioners and other sources of rapid temperature change.

Choosing the right position before filling the tank is considerably easier than trying to move hundreds of kilograms of aquarium afterwards.

Reaching for Chemicals Before Finding the Cause

Cloudy water. Algae. Changing pH. Rising nitrate.

There seems to be a bottle promising to fix almost everything.

Instead: Ask why the problem is happening before trying to remove the symptom.

Test the water. Check the stocking level, feeding, lighting, filtration and maintenance routine.

Sometimes the solution isn’t another product.

It’s correcting the imbalance that caused the problem in the first place.

Adding Random Rocks, Wood or Decorations

Something collected from the garden, beach or local creek may look wonderfully natural, but that doesn’t automatically make it aquarium safe.

Instead: Use materials known to be safe for freshwater aquariums, and remember that some rocks can alter water chemistry while collected materials may introduce contaminants.

Natural-looking and aquarium-safe aren’t always the same thing.

Ignoring Small Warning Signs

Fish often tell us something is wrong before a major problem develops.

Gasping at the surface, rapid breathing, clamped fins, unusual hiding, loss of appetite, damaged fins or abnormal swimming deserve attention.

Instead: Know what normal behaviour looks like for your fish and investigate changes early.

Don’t immediately medicate the entire aquarium simply because a fish looks unwell. Check the water and environment first, then seek appropriate advice if necessary.

Trying to Fix Everything at Once

When something goes wrong, panic can lead to a flurry of water changes, filter cleaning, chemicals, medications and rearranging.

That can make it even harder to work out what caused the original problem.

Instead: Observe, test and change one thing at a time wherever the situation safely allows.

Understanding the cause is far more useful than repeatedly treating symptoms.

Perhaps the Biggest Mistake: Thinking of Fish as Decoration

A tropical aquarium can be extraordinarily beautiful.

But the fish inside it aren’t ornaments.

They’re living animals with social needs, preferred environments, individual behaviours and species-specific requirements.

A responsible fish keeper doesn’t simply ask:

“How many fish can I fit in this tank?”

A better question is:

“What do these fish need in order to thrive?”

Get that part right, and the beautiful aquarium usually follows.

Your First Tropical Aquarium Shopping Checklist

By now, we’ve covered a lot.

So if you’re standing in an aquarium shop wondering what you actually need to bring home, this checklist will help keep things simple.

You don’t need every gadget on the shelf.

You need the right equipment to create a safe, stable environment for your fish.

Fish tank essentialsThe Aquarium

·       Aquarium — for a beginner community, around 60–75 litres (roughly a two-foot tank) is a practical starting size.

·       Purpose-built aquarium stand — strong enough to support the enormous weight of a filled aquarium.

·       Appropriate aquarium mat or polystyrene base — if required for your particular tank. Check the manufacturer’s instructions, as not every aquarium design should have material placed beneath it.

·       Lid or cover — particularly important for fish that may jump and for reducing evaporation.

Filtration, Heating and Lighting

·       Filter — aim for approximately 4–6 times the aquarium volume per hour as a starting point for a typical community tank.

For example:

60 L tank approximately 240–360 L/hour

75 L tank approximately 300–450 L/hour

100 L tank approximately 400–600 L/hour

·       Adjustable aquarium heater — appropriately sized for the tank.

·       Aquarium thermometer — so you can monitor the actual water temperature rather than relying solely on the heater setting.

·       Aquarium light — suitable for freshwater plants.

·       Light timer — an inexpensive way to provide a consistent day-and-night cycle.

Substrate and Aqua scaping

·       Natural aquarium gravel or sand — rinse gravel thoroughly before adding it to the aquarium.

·       Aquarium-safe rocks and/or driftwood — avoid collecting random materials unless you know they’re safe.

·       Live aquatic plants — beginner-friendly options include:

  • Java Fern
  • Anubias
  • Vallisneria
  • Cryptocoryne
  • Amazon Sword
  • Java Moss

Remember to inspect and rinse new plants carefully before adding them to the aquarium.

Water Care and Testing

·       Freshwater test kit capable of measuring:

    • Ammonia
    • Nitrite
    • Nitrate
    • pH

·       Water conditioner — suitable for treating chlorine and/or chloramine in your tap water.

·       Equipment or supplies needed for your chosen fishless-cycling method

The aquarium should be biologically ready before the fish come home.

Maintenance Equipment

Keep these items exclusively for aquarium use:

·       Aquarium siphon/gravel vacuum

·       Dedicated aquarium bucket

·       Algae scraper, pad or magnetic cleaner

·       Fish net

·       Aquarium plant scissors or small trimming tools, if needed

·       Clean aquarium-only cloths

Never use soap, detergent or household cleaning products on anything that will come into contact with aquarium water.

Food

You don’t need an enormous collection on day one.

Start with foods appropriate for the species you intend to keep:

·       Quality tropical flake, micro-pellet or granule

·       Sinking pellets or wafers if keeping bottom dwellers

·       Suitable frozen or live foods for occasional variety

·       Fresh vegetables where appropriate for the species

Buy food for the fish you actually have—not simply because the packet has a tropical fish on the front.

Before You Buy the Fish

This is perhaps the most important part of the shopping list.

Before bringing any fish home, check:

·       Adult size

·       Temperament

·       Schooling or social requirements

·       Water requirements

·       Diet

·       Swimming level

·       Compatibility with the fish already planned for the aquarium

·       Whether your aquarium will still be suitable when the fish are fully grown

And resist the temptation to buy every fish on your list at once.

A beautiful aquarium is built gradually.

The Things You Probably Don’t Need

For most beginner community aquariums, you don’t need a cupboard full of products promising to:

  • instantly clear the water
  • constantly adjust the pH
  • kill every trace of algae
  • replace good maintenance
  • solve problems you don’t actually have

Buy what has a genuine purpose.

Understand why you’re using it.

And allow the aquarium itself time to mature.

One Last Thing Before You Leave the Shop

Don’t let the shopping list become more important than the animals.

You can always return for another decoration, plant or piece of equipment.

And you can certainly return another day for another fish.

Set up the environment first.

Let it become biologically ready.

Then choose its inhabitants carefully.

That is a much better beginning than bringing home a bag of fish and trying to build an aquarium around them afterwards.

Final Thoughts: Build an Ecosystem, not a Fish Collection

A tropical aquarium can become one of the most beautiful and fascinating features in your home.

But what makes it truly special isn’t the glass, the lighting or even the colours of the fish.

It’s the little living world you’ve created inside it.

When an aquarium is thoughtfully planned, the fish begin to behave as they should. Tetras school together through the plants. Corydoras explore the bottom in their little groups. Gouramis investigate the surface and weave between leaves. Livebearers display, forage and, quite often, surprise you with a new generation of tiny fry.

You stop simply looking at a fish tank.

You start watching an ecosystem.

And perhaps that’s one of the greatest pleasures of keeping tropical fish.

A couple sit on a sofa watching a beautiful, naturally planted aquarium.There will be things to learn along the way. You may battle algae occasionally. A plant may refuse to grow where you want it. Water-test results might send you searching for answers, and sooner or later you’ll probably fall in love with a fish at the aquarium shop that simply isn’t suitable for your tank.

That’s all part of becoming a better fish keeper.

The important thing is to keep asking why.

Why is the water cloudy?

Why is that fish hiding?

Why is algae suddenly increasing?

Why isn’t that plant thriving?

Why does this species need a school?

Why shouldn’t I add another fish?

Understanding the why allows us to make better decisions for the animals in our care rather than simply reaching for another bottle, another gadget or another fish.

And that brings me back to the philosophy behind this entire guide:

Build an ecosystem, not a fish collection.

Give your fish clean, stable water. Give them plants and places to explore. Feed them thoughtfully. Allow schooling fish to school and bottom dwellers to forage. Give them enough space to swim and choose tank mates that allow them to live without constant stress.

Most importantly, remember that the fish behind the glass are living animals.

They deserve more than simply surviving.

They deserve an environment where they can thrive.

So, the next time you find yourself standing in front of an aquarium shop tank thinking, I could fit one more in...

Does my aquarium need another fish—or does that fish simply deserve the right aquarium?
